i am kniiting the summer flies shawl. i need to know what it means when the pattern reads (yo, k3 pass) 56 times, to 5Sts from end. I don’t umderstand the pass part. . I would like for you to let me know how to do this. thanks
Hello Ramona!
Let me see if I can explain this, it’s really not that difficult of a stitch and probably much harder to explain than to actually do.
Step 1: Knit 3 stitches. When they are knitted they are now on your right needle.
Step 2: Count 3 stitches on your right needle from left to right. Scoop up the 3rd stitch (which was actually your first knitted stitch of the 3) and pass it over the last 2 on your needle. You may find it a little tight to slip your needle in and scoop, so you may have to tug at it a bit with your fingers to loosen it up.
Please let me know if this was helpful to you!
Thank you soooo much for the step….i was confusing too ^^ Thank you again
Thank goodness Ramona asked this question. I had just finished reading the pattern and already wondered what PASS meant. Thanks so much for that simple explanation.

I just watched the video for binding off on the Summer Flies shawl, but cannot remember all of it, & have computer access in the library only. Do you have the written instructions for this, & if so, could you email it to me.
Thanks.
I love this project, which I am making for my 2 grandchildren.
Posted on the video page.
Can you help me starting the summer flies shawl? I have recently started knitting so am a little confused …
Should the whole shawl be knitted on circular needles? If so, how is it possible to cast on and knit with three stitches? Or can the shawl be knitted flat on two normal needles?
I have a question about the “M1″. I don’t see a clear “bar” to pick up for the “Make one”. Not sure why the bar to pick up to use when making one looks different than usual. What am I missing?
Hi Julie! Try stretching the stitches apart. Maybe this will give you a clear view of the ‘bar’ that lies between the stitches!
can you help me starting the summer flies?
i have trouble on the begin .cast on 3 sts, knit 6 rows.pick up 3 sts from the long edge of the garter stich, with an additional 3 sts from the cast on edge .how to pick up the stich, please.
Thanks
Hi Sean! The easiest way I’ve found to explain the process are in the step by step pictures on the blog. I hope that helps!
I understand pm=place marker but M1=make one does that mean to increase one stitch?
Hi Kathy! Yes, it is a M1 increase. The one I use is more commonly known as the M1R (right leaning increase).
What is long tail cast on method?
I am having a hard time interpetting the 7 nth row on sec 2 please email me
I am knitting the Autumn Flutters pattern at the moment and wondered if you could help me out with something. I am up to the pleated ruffle and I can’t figure out row 1. After I P3 the pattern says KCO 6. If I do that it places the cast on stitches on the left needle. Do I then knit the 6 stitches before I P3 again? If this is correct does it mean the 6 cast on and knitted stitches are not attached to the previous P3?
I hope I am making sense.
Chris
Hi, I just started Summer Flies shawl, I hve been knitting for yrs, but only occasionaly, so I may have attempted too advanced a project. I’am on the 37th row and find that I should be increasing but I’m on the WS, if I read the discription correctly, I should only increase on the RS. Do I need to rib out and try to find my way again????
Ohhh…so when you call for M1, you mean M1R? Usually when I M1, I assume it means M1L. So I should be sure to do a make one increase leaning right. Correct? Thanks! I can’t wait to try this! I hope I don’t have more questions. The directions seem pretty clear cut!
I have the same question as Chris on June 15, 2011. I am doing the large shawl of Autumn Flutters. In Section 11 – Pleated Ruffle, Row 1, the KCO 6 puts the stitches on the left needle. Do I then knit them within the first row?
Iam knitting the Heel Head Scarf Which has i the Increasing Short Rows section “am” and “am2″ abbreviations. What do they mean? Please help.
I want to start the summer flies shawl, and I’m not a very experience knitter. I have no idea how to “Pick up 3 sts from the long edge of the garter stitch, with an additional 3 sts from the cast on edge, for a total of 9 sts.” , does that mean I need to increase 3 (M1) at the beginning of the row, and then increase 3 at the end?
I would really appreciate your help, the patter is so beautiful and I really want to make this shawl.
Thank you
